S2S Tracking (Server-to-Server)
S2S tracking records affiliate conversions server-to-server, bypassing the browser. Unaffected by ad blockers or cookie restrictions.
What it means in practice
S2S tracking -- also called server-to-server tracking -- is an attribution method where conversion data is transmitted directly between servers rather than through the user's browser. When a user clicks an affiliate link, the tracking platform generates a unique click ID and passes it to the advertiser's website. This click ID is stored on the advertiser's server. Unlike pixel tracking, which embeds a snippet in the user's browser, S2S tracking keeps the entire data exchange on the server side, making it independent of browser behavior and privacy settings.
The S2S callback flow follows a straightforward sequence. First, a user clicks an affiliate link containing a click ID. The advertiser's landing page captures and stores that click ID -- typically in the user's session or database record. When the user completes a qualifying action such as a registration, first-time deposit (FTD), or purchase, the advertiser's server sends an HTTP request (a postback) to the tracking platform. This request includes the original click ID and conversion details, allowing the platform to attribute the conversion to the correct affiliate within the attribution window.
S2S tracking has become the preferred method in affiliate marketing for several reasons. Privacy regulations like GDPR and browser-level restrictions on third-party cookies have made browser-based tracking increasingly unreliable. Ad blockers can prevent tracking pixels from firing entirely. S2S tracking avoids all of these issues because it operates outside the browser environment. The tradeoff is that implementation requires closer technical coordination between the advertiser and the tracking platform -- click IDs must be captured, stored, and passed back accurately for attribution to work.

Frequently Asked Questions
Common questions about s2s tracking (server-to-server), how it works in affiliate programs, and where it shows up across Track360's supported verticals.
S2S (server-to-server) tracking is an attribution method where conversion events are communicated directly between the advertiser's server and the tracking platform's server. When a user completes a qualifying action, the advertiser's server sends an HTTP callback containing the click ID and conversion details. Because the data exchange happens entirely on the server side, it is not affected by ad blockers, cookie restrictions, or browser privacy settings.
Related Terms
Postback
A postback is a server-to-server HTTP callback confirming a conversion event like a registration, FTD, or purchase. Unaffected by ad blockers or cookies.
Pixel Tracking
Pixel tracking uses a small image tag or JavaScript snippet embedded on a conversion page to notify the tracking platform when a user completes a qualifying action. The pixel fires in the user's browser, sending conversion data back to the tracking server for affiliate attribution.
Affiliate Link
An affiliate link is a unique tracked URL assigned to an affiliate that attributes clicks, conversions, and commissions to the correct partner.
Attribution Window
The defined time period after a user clicks an affiliate link during which any qualifying conversion is credited to the referring affiliate.
Deep Linking
An affiliate tracking method that sends referred users directly to a specific page (such as a game, product, or landing page) rather than the homepage, while maintaining attribution.
S2S vs Pixel Tracking
S2S tracking sends conversion data server-to-server via postbacks. Pixel tracking fires a browser-based snippet on conversion pages. S2S is more reliable; pixel depends on the user's browser.
Cookieless Tracking
Cookieless tracking attributes conversions without relying on browser cookies, using methods like server-to-server calls, first-party data, or fingerprinting.
Conversion Tracking
Conversion tracking is the technical process of recording when a referred user completes a defined action, such as a deposit or purchase, and linking it to the referring affiliate.
