Multi-Tier-Provisionsstrukturen erlauben Affiliates, nicht nur an direkt geworbenen Kunden zu verdienen, sondern auch an Conversions, die von ins Programm geworbenen Sub-Affiliates erzeugt werden. In einem Two-Tier-Modell verdient ein Affiliate seine Standardprovision auf Tier-1-Vermittlungen plus einen kleineren Prozentsatz auf Conversions seiner Tier-2-Partner. Manche Programme erweitern dies auf drei oder mehr Stufen, wobei die Komplexität mit jeder zusätzlichen Ebene steigt.
Diese Struktur unterscheidet sich vom Multi-Level-Marketing (MLM). In Affiliate-Programmen werden die Provisionsstufen vom Betreiber als Akquisitionskosten finanziert, nicht durch Einzahlungen der Teilnehmer ins System. Die Tier-2- (oder Tier-3-)Provision ist ein zusätzlicher Anreiz, den der Betreiber zahlt, um Affiliates zu belohnen, die das Partnernetzwerk wachsen lassen.
